Calibrating printer steps per millimeter

For a measured calibration, multiply the current steps per millimeter by commanded travel divided by actual travel. If an axis moves too little, the calculated setting increases. Measure the physical movement relevant to the axis instead of assuming that an undersized printed part proves the steps setting is wrong.

Check the drive geometry first

The geometry calculation uses motor steps, microstepping, gear ratio, and travel per output revolution. For a lead screw, travel per revolution is lead, which can differ from thread pitch on a multi-start screw. For a belt drive, pulley teeth and belt pitch determine travel.

Do not calibrate around another fault

Loose pulleys, slipping filament, backlash, missed steps, and material shrinkage can all affect measurements. Correct those causes before changing a setting intended to describe the drive. Repeat the measurement over a suitable distance and verify the new value before saving it to firmware.

Applying a measured correction

If an axis is commanded to move 100 mm but moves 98 mm with a setting of 80 steps/mm, the corrected setting is about 81.633 steps/mm. The commanded distance is divided by the measured distance, not the other way around. Enter the existing firmware setting that was active during the measurement; otherwise the correction is applied to the wrong baseline.

Measure from repeatable reference points and approach them consistently if backlash is present. Repeating the test helps distinguish a systematic scale error from measurement scatter. For an extruder, distinguish commanded filament movement from finished-part dimensions, which also depend on flow settings and material behavior. A geometric drive calculation offers an independent check: motor full steps per revolution, microsteps, and gearing determine pulses, while screw lead or belt travel determines distance. If the measured correction is unexpectedly large, investigate mechanical slip, an incorrect firmware mode, or a wrong gear ratio before treating the new number as a calibration success.

Formula

Corrected steps/mm = current steps/mm × commanded travel / measured travel. Geometry = motor steps × microsteps × ratio / travel.
